App-date: Student's content creation in and outside the classroom

Dr Rossana Espinoza with input from SLA Farhathul Islam Sanu

This edition of Inspire offers a brief review of the educational applications for student’s content creation in and outside the classroom.

There are several apps available these days, so there are plenty of ways to give students opportunities to create their own content in various format. Here a selection of three apps recommended by our student digital champion at Centre for Academic Practice Enhancement. He considered those useful and interesting to explore!

We are living in the YouTube era with lots of broadcasters across all ages and walks of life sharing what they know and learn, so how about asking students create their own videos, animations or introductions with this application.

Moovly offers lots of free templates, videos, animations and sounds. Students could also upload and use their own photographs, sounds or videos.

How could this be used to enhance the student learning experience? Perhaps appraising another student’s presentation, exploring a current issue, recording their student learning journey.

Comic Life http://www.comiclife.com/
We have all heard colleagues stating that students don’t like reading books anymore, but how about devising their own creative books by bringing comics to the learning space?

Comic Life offers fonts, templates, balloons, lettering art, which will help students create their stories and convert them into creative comic books.

How could this be used to enhance the student learning experience? Perhaps summarising a lecture, devising flyers, narrating the full cycle of a story from having an issue to creating the solution.

Spreaker https://www.spreaker.com/broadcast
Colleagues also comment that students may be too talkative or on the other hand students don’t wish to talk in front of others, so how about giving them the opportunity to develop their own podcast in an area of interest and related to a topic you wish to explore?

Spreaker gives students the chance to audio record themselves at their own place and time. You will also have the chance to consider asking for a podcast instead of requesting a written review. The opportunities to explore are endless.

How could this be used to enhance the student learning experience? Perhaps consider setting the task for students to choose their preferred podcast so they have a role model to emulate, and then create their own podcast to appreciate something of value like an article or a lecture.
